I'm sure you're well aware that we are smack dab in the middle of an epic #WomensHistoryMonth. I have been racking my brain -scrolling & trolling profiles for weeks - about who we should feature! I mean not like we need just a month to celebrate women - we should wake up feeling celebrated everyday, as women, just for another chance to conquer the day! But it's important for me to not waste a chance to spotlight women in our #HERstory, especially while we have garnered worldwide attention. I'm still getting used to having a platform - this platform - even though I've been given a voice since I got here. With so many phenomenal females to choose from, my mind stayed stuck in a whirlwind. I trolled and scrolled in utter confusion - up until last night. I had an AHA! moment and in an instant, I knew exactly who to write about. God has a funny way of showing you the answer has been in front of you all along, when we least expect it. Last night, I attended an event for the Charlotte Business Journal honoring the city's top Women in Business. It was an privilege to not only be surrounded by a room full of impactful women, but to be invited to celebrate one of the honorees that is near & dear to the heart of Womanity: Denada Jackson. What I loved best about the #CBJEvent is how each woman got to choose her own theme song to walk to the stage on, showcasing her personality! Denada's choice? Superwoman by Alicia Keys. Each of the honorees came to the podium and addressed a high school photo of themselves - giving her a piece of advice that she would now give herself. While most responses were witty and clever, Denada dropped a beautiful gem as she was called to receive her award. Her advice was this:
"It's ok to fall...Because it's only when we fall, that we find our superhero strength and become SUPERWOMEN!"
She's certainly a hero in her own right. Denada is a native Charlottean, the owner of Bella Boca PR & Events in the Queen City and part-time Batman! (Yes, I said my boss is Batman) A graduate of NC A&T University, Denada has been dominating the Public Relations game for nearly a decade under her own brand. We met back in the summer of 2013 after my cousin (& her BFF) connected us and I jumped right on to #teamBellaBoca as an intern - while juggling post grad life as a full-time nanny to 3. Since then, D and I have tackled the highs and lows of entrepreneurial life together - and she is a HUGE driving force behind the WomanityNOW brand! Denada's expertise and wisdom has helped guide me since our inception; always encouraging me to bring this dream to fruition. What I love best is we continue to grow and evolve with every client we take on! Denada is a creative and quirky personality which is what I love most about her. On the surface, it's pretty cool to rattle off a resume of famous figures - like Carolina Panther & former Walter Payton Man of the Year Thomas Davis or CNN Hero Robin Emmons of Sow Much Good, to name a few - that I have had the opportunity to work with through Bella Boca. But at the core, our most rewarding work is that we partner with purposeful non-profits and small business owners to help increase their brand visibility and imprint in our world. Thank you Denada for teaching one of many of my biggest lessons through our BB motto: Be HEARD! I'm honored to make HERstory with you. It is your ambition, spontaneity and passion for inspiring others that has led me to find my love of doing the same. It's an honor to be your Robin ;-)
